“The student does not compete with the mestre and the mestre who has respect does not compete with the student.” Mestre Curio

East London Capoeira (ELC)

East London Capoeira (ELC) has students from a wide range of backgrounds and each individual brings something unique to the group. This diversity, combined with our shared passion for capoeira and having fun, makes it an inspiring place to learn and play! There are students that have trained with Mestre Fantasma since ‘91 and new people are welcomed almost every week.

Mestre Fantasma and his students have been teaching and playing capoeira for over 20 years in the UK and abroad. We also have strong associations with Brazilian masters that visit regularly to share their experiences of capoeira and life in Brazil. Mestre Fantasma’s empowering teaching methods, combined with this Brazilian authenticity, results in a diverse and interesting group of capoeira students.

Teaching methods are varied so that we can cater for different learning styles; although we belieive that some lessons are only learnt in the roda.

“Apart from a skill, it also lays down rules which benefits those taking part. It offers positive benefits through developing respect for others. It’s also great fun.”

“I like capoeira because it is a full body workout, I feel strong. When I play I feel excited and motivated. I would tell anyone considering capoeira to join…its good.”
